Water safety on Holiday

When on holiday any pool that you use can be full of danger. Particularly on holiday resorts pools may be crowded and there may be no lifeguards present.
There could also be a lack of safety aids and emergency services may not be easy to call either due to language problems or access to a nearby phone.

The pools themselves may not have depths marked very well or at all. The floor of the pool may well slope unexpectedly in places. Perhaps with a steep drop close to any diving areas. You should also be aware that in some pool there would be water inlets and outflows on the floor or the sides of the pool that may trap hair, hands, fingers, feet, toes etc. This can also occur where there are bars around the pool. Obviously the presence of diving boards also creates the opportunity for an accident. Particularly collisions, but also hitting the bottom of the pool.

Some free form pools may be as little as 2 feet in depth and will be very dangerous if this is not realised. Pool hygiene should also be considered. If you cannot see the bottom of a pool it is probably not a good idea to swim in it.

Children when on holiday will be particularly exited and may well act rashly. You should always examine any pool for depth before allowing them to dive in. Generally 1.8 to 2.00m should be considered as the minimum.

A final thought
Although your child may be able to swim a certain distance in the closeted environment of one of our pools with a teacher present they may panic in a crowded or unfamiliar pool when trying to cover the same distance!
